why Isolation?

I wondered if folk with experience of these things could answer a wondering of mine?  Why in psychiatric wards do people get locked up in isolation? Surely I would have thought, to lock a fundamentally social type of animal up in enforced isolation would have adverse effects on mental state???

7. folie-a-une answered: Isolation is usually used to keep one safe from themselves or others. I’ve been in isolation many times after hurting myself or someone else.
